A semiotic approach to Salvador Allende's speech and the Chilean path to socialism

Abstract
This work aims to analyze different speeches given by Salvador Allende as president of Chile during the period 1970-1973. The approach developed, with tools proposed by Eliseo Verón's theoretical model, examines the discursive construction of a political project crossed by the strong ideological tensions of the historical context in which it materialized. Through the semiotic perspective, Allende's statements are thought in relation to the conditions of production of the speech act, which implies articulating the structural units and the internal logic of the discourse with the processes of social and political interaction. From this perspective, the ways in which the left-wing leader's act of enunciation is related to the different categories of recipients of his messages (pro-recipient, counter-recipient and para-recipient) are recognized. In the same sense, discursive tensions are also identified within the counterhegemonic field itself, based on the questions about the “peaceful path to socialism” that were verified in the leftist space in the full exercise of power.
