Considering History: Materiality and Collective Memory in the Cult of José Martí

Abstract
The omnipresence of José Martí in the Cuban public space has raised questions about his glorification, or at least about the material forms of the commemorative exercise. Ernesto Sánchez Valdés’ documentary Héroe de culto (2015) critically reflects on the repetitive tribute to the ‘Apostle’ of Independence focusing on the mass production of plastic busts. Delving deeper into this critique of the heritage industry, artist Reynier Leyva Novo presents a disfigured bust that enables reflection on the process of myth-making, its political instrumentalization, and the various temporalities of Martí’s veneration. By adopting a historiographical and analytical approach to the material rhetoric of monuments in public spaces, as well as to cultural productions that problematize the tribute, this essay explores the implications of commemorative strategies and the possibilities of amending memory.
