From narratives about origin to emotional identities: aporias of the memory of the colonial past in the present time of Mexico

Abstract
The aim of this article is to analyze the transformation of the identity categories that have emerged in Mexico to shape society and its dynamics. To this end, this paper examines first the passage from a mestizo nation utopia to a project for the construction of a pluricultural nation responsible for the colonial past and oriented towards the construction of a pluricultural nation that is responsible for the colonial past and governed by harmonious social relations. In a second part, we discuss how essentialist definitions, such as the concept of “original peoples”, which postulates the preservation of the pre-Hispanic identity of the indigenous people, survive in the very project of the pluricultural nation. Finally, we explore the recent discursive transformations that have led to the rise, in the public discourse of social networks, of new identity and emotional categories such as prieto and whitexican, which present Mexican society as a binary and irreconcilable order between the brown and indigenous and the white descendants of the conquistadors. We will see how in this new discourse the intercultural ideal has vanished, as well as the imagination of a possible future.
